better than ignoring the Today Show

Since having my second child something has happened to my regular reading schedule.

I don’t just mean that I read even less than I did before (I do, by the way), I mean what is in my google reader has changed.

After Eddie was born, I was searching for people just like me.  People having the same struggles.  I was desperate to know I wasn’t alone.  I was also looking to laugh since I felt like my world was falling apart.  Laughing helped get through each day.

While I still have some of my favorite blogs and sites from those darker days of momhood hanging out in my reader because they have become friends and touchstones in my life, new things are popping up.

One of the sites I visit daily is allParenting.com.

Let me back up…

For the past three months I have been turning on The Today Show when Charlie and I get up.  And everyday I hop on twitter and complain about The Today Show.

I am sure the entire internet wonders why in the crap I still turn it on.

Well that is an easy answer, I don’t.  Not because I don’t want to, but because Eddie is now home with me, so we are watching Octonauts at 7am (don’t even talk to me about this show.  It’s weird.  I could do a whole post on it’s weirdness).

So why do I still want to watch the Today Show even though it bothers me?  Because I like most of of the segments, just not all of the segments. I wish I could scroll through their offerings and choose which ones I want to view because most of them are ridiculous (I do NOT care about any celebrity and their “reality” show.  You are a celebrity…that by itself is not reality).

This is why I love allParenting.com.

It’s sort of a new site and I found it because some of my favorite people in the whole wide world write there.

I stayed (and subscribed) because it’s exactly like the Today Show–only in print,so I can “tune in” to read any time during the day.  I can also pick to read what interests me.

So I skip most celebrity stuff (‘cuz it brings me down, yo.  I will never be that hip.  #sadpanda #hashtaggingablogpost), and hit up the funny, the interesting, and the important…to me…stuff.

For instance, as a high school teacher and a mom to kids who will be tweens some day I enjoyed How to Handle Tweens with Attitude.

Again as a teacher and mom to an almost-three-year-old, I was interested in iPhones for First Graders? Have we Gone Mad?

This is the one I thought was so important I shared it with my husband: June is National Safety Month: How Safe is Your Family?

Because I want to make my/our carbon footprint a little smaller, I like articles like Green Your Cleaning Routine.

And because I am obsessed with finding new yummy recipes, I just added Fully Loaded Tex Mex Sliders to my “recipes” bookmarks.

An extra bonus to allParenting?  They have an entire section devoted to baby names.  I KNOW! Even though we JUST had a baby?  I find you are never too “not having babies” to love reading about baby names.  Am I right?  Can I get an amen?

Right.

So yes, allParenting is better than the Today Show except that you don’t get to ogle Matt Lauer.

Now excuse me while I pour over the Top 100 Baby Boy Names from 2011 to see if my boys’ names are on it.

Our Together IS Better! {Giveaway}

Of the five girl friends I went to college with, I was one of the last to have a baby.

Of my four besties, I was the third to have a baby.

Of the girls I graduated with from high school, I was probably one of the last to have a baby.

So when I got pregnant with Eddie at the ripe old age of 31, there were many, MANY people of whom to ask advice when it came to what baby gear I needed.

I surveyed ALL of them on every piece of baby gear I could think of to find out what was the best.

I asked them what they couldn’t live without.

I asked them what was the most useless, over-rated things they had.

And then Cort and I went to register.  We rocked that shiz.  It took us almost no time and we were completely done.

Guess what.

The second time you have a baby?  THERE ARE ALL NEW THINGS.

Better things.

Admittedly, I registered again.   Not because I was going to have any showers, but because people asked what we wanted/needed for this second baby.  And because there were some toddler things we were going to need.

Brica sent me three of my current favorite baby gear items when I had Charlie.

Do you know of Brica?  It’s one of the BEST products for baby/toddler gear out there.

They make many things you can get in other brands, but they do it better and make a more efficient product.

In their own words,

All of our products work great, and they’re also portable, good looking, and most importantly…easy to use.

So whether its bath time with the kids, a day full of errands, or a long weekend away, you’ll have just what you need to make things run more smoothly.

Smart solutions with less hassle, less headaches.

So let me tell you what I have…

First, we have the Day & Night Light Musical Auto Mirror.

BEST idea ever...a remote for the light!

I love the car mirrors for three reasons:

  1. Both of my kids loved to look at themselves.
  2. It helped me to see if the baby was sacked out or awake as I was driving.
  3. It helped me to see where the baby’s mouth was when I was trying to stick the pacifier back in.

We had a mirror for Eddie when he was in the infant carrier/car seat, but my biggest problem with it was that I couldn’t use it when we were driving at night since it was too dark to see.

This one has a light…that is turned on/off via remote control…so I can see what is going on even when we are driving home from friends’ houses at midnight.

It also has music that is controlled via the remote.  I haven’t used this feature much since we always have music on in the car anyway, but I can see using it at night or if I took the mirror off to use on a pack n play on vacation.

Secondly, we got the Phone pod.

staying connected on walks

This was what I was MOST excited about getting…how sad is that?  But let me tell you, it is really awesome.

First, pretty much any phone will fit.  I have a Droid 2 and because of the adjustable thingys that hold the phone in place, it fits nice and snuggley.  I don’t worry at ALL about it falling out.

This has totally changed my shopping trips.  I can have all of my lists on them (I use wunderlist for android, if you are wondering) for things like the farmer’s market or target and check things off as I go because it will attach to a shopping cart too.  And when I take it off, I can toss it right into my purse or diaper bag.

It will attach to pretty much anything tubular in shape.  So you could potentially even use it in the car.  It seriously has a million uses.

Lastly, we got the Infant Comfort Canopy. This was probably the product I underestimated the most.

it's like camping! for a baby!

I really wasn’t sure I would get a lot of use out of this. I mean, the carseat comes with the little canopy that I use for sun, and we have a cute, warm minky cover I figured would work when it was rainy too.

But I forgot about being outside with a new baby in the summer with the UV rays and the bugs and the potential rain/splashes from pools. I forgot how the canopy that comes with the carrier is useless against all of these things.

And the minky one I had is only going to make him hot and sweaty and full of heat rash if I try to take him out in 80 degree weather.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we were at a friends’ house and we decided to have a fire.  Despite the sun and bugs, I took Charlie out with us because I had this sweet canopy.

It keeps bugs out, AND it has a cover that keeps out 98% of UVA and UVB rays and is water proof. This is awesome because Charlie is still too little for sunblock.

I put the handle of the carrier down and put the canopy over the whole thing, but you can also leave it on while you carry it.

This is probably the thing I most wish I had when Eddie was small since he was a summer baby and I felt trapped in the house.  This canopy has allowed me to get out with the baby and enjoy the spring/summer.

I seriously love Brica products. I have a whole wish list of their products that I still want for the boys.

And guess what?  They are available at Target AND Babies R Us.

Talk about convenient!  I go to Target weekly.  I mean, doesn’t everyone?

Ahem.

But wait!  Guess what!

YOU could win this same Brica package!

That’s right, all three items (The day & night light music mirror, the phone pod, and the infant carrier canopy) could be YOURS*.

The Legal Stuff:  I was provided with the three products from Brica for review, however all opinions are mine.  Brica is providing the spoils of this giveaway to one lucky person.  *Winner can substitute a different product of equal or lesser value for the Infant Carrier Canopy if they wish since not everyone has a tiny baby like I do, but Brica products are way awesome.  Contest is open to US residents only and ends at midnight on Friday, June 15.
